Senior Discount Days: Your Week at a Glance

Most senior discounts run one day a week. Here is the weekly rhythm: which days matter, and how to plan your errands around them.

The single biggest trick to senior discounts is knowing what day it is. Most programmes run one day a week, and errands planned around them save real money over a year. Here is the week as a Canadian senior should see it, built from the live listings in our directory. Use its “On today” toggle any morning to see exactly what applies to you.

Monday: travel day

The quietest shopping day is one of the best travel days. BC Ferries’ free passenger fares for BC residents 65+ run Monday to Thursday, so the week starts with free sailing days. Monday is also a fine day to book: hotel senior rates and VIA Rail’s 60+ fares apply every day, but the trains and front desks are calmer at the week’s edges.

Tuesday: thrift and film

Value Village’s senior discount (55+) lands on Tuesdays, making it the day to do the thrift run: clothing, housewares, books. Cineplex senior pricing applies on regular showtimes, and Tuesday has long been the movies’ own discount day at many theatres, so check both before you buy the ticket.

Wednesday: pantry day

Bulk Barn’s seniors day (65+) covers the dry goods: flour, spices, nuts, tea, baking supplies, the heaviest part of the grocery list and the part that keeps the longest. Wednesday is the day to stock the pantry in bulk and let the weekend shop shrink to fresh items.

Thursday: the big one

Thursday is pharmacy day across Canada: Shoppers Drug Mart’s seniors day takes 20% off items at the regular price for shoppers 65+, with points offers frequently stacked on top. If you only reorganise one day of your week, make it Thursday: move the pharmacy run, the toiletries and the household basics onto it, and let the discount do a year’s worth of quiet work. BC seniors get their fourth free ferry day of the week, too.

Friday to Sunday: ask anywhere days

The weekend belongs to the standing discounts: restaurant 55+ menus (Denny’s runs theirs every day), Mandarin’s senior buffet pricing, Michaels’ 55+ discount, senior transit fares, and attraction admission. None of these care what day it is, but they all reward the habit of asking.

Putting the week together

The pattern matters more than any single day: anchor the pharmacy to Thursday, the pantry to Wednesday, the thrift run to Tuesday, and let travel fall on the week’s quiet edges. Two or three planned stops beat one enormous shop, and every one of them starts with the same sentence. Here is how to ask, and what to say if they say no.

Know your days, and the week plans itself.
