CIBC: Senior Account Offers
CIBC waives the monthly fee for seniors on the Smart Account, but its Everyday Chequing page sets the age at over 65. Read both before you switch.
CIBC takes the monthly fee off two of its chequing accounts for seniors, but its own pages do not use one single age for both. The senior banking pages describe the Smart Account offer for seniors aged 60 and over, and they say the Smart Account carries no monthly fee for seniors. The Everyday Chequing page, however, states its no fee offer for seniors over 65. This entry reports both ages exactly as CIBC publishes them, because the difference decides when you qualify.
How to claim it
- Check which CIBC account you hold, since the age rule follows the account and not the bank as a whole.
- Ask CIBC to apply the senior offer to your account, and confirm the age rule that applies to that account.
- Review your next statement to make sure the monthly fee has stopped.
On Everyday Chequing, the offer includes 18 transactions, and each transaction over that number costs $1.25. On the Smart Account, CIBC’s senior pages promise no monthly fee for seniors, framed at 60 and over. If you are between 60 and 65, the Smart Account is the one whose published terms clearly include you.
Because CIBC publishes two ages, do not rely on any summary, including this one, if the branch tells you something different. Ask the advisor to show you the terms for your exact account. Fees and offers can change, so check CIBC’s own pages before you switch accounts to chase a fee saving.
Practical tip: if you are 60 to 64 and paying a fee on Everyday Chequing, ask what the Smart Account would cost you with your usual number of monthly transactions before you move.
